Michael Saylor’s Strategy Now Holds Over 3% of All Bitcoin After Latest Acquisition

Michael Saylor’s crypto-focused firm, Strategy, has significantly increased its Bitcoin reserves, now controlling over 3% of all Bitcoin ever mined. In its latest move, the company added 6,220 Bitcoins, investing $739.8 million in the week ending July 20, according to a recent SEC filing.

This acquisition brings Strategy’s total Bitcoin holdings to 607,770 BTC, amounting to roughly 3.05% of the 19.9 million Bitcoins currently in circulation. The firm’s crypto treasury is valued at approximately $72 billion, further solidifying its position as the largest corporate holder of Bitcoin globally.

Since it began accumulating Bitcoin in late 2020, Strategy has utilized a mix of funding options — including common stock, preferred stock, and debt instruments — to support its aggressive acquisition strategy. The initiative was initially framed as a hedge against inflation and has since inspired a number of other companies to adopt similar models.

In a separate announcement, Strategy disclosed plans to issue 5 million shares of variable-rate Series A perpetual preferred stock. The proceeds from this offering are expected to fund additional Bitcoin purchases. This marks the fourth series of preferred shares issued by the company.

The impact of this strategic focus on Bitcoin is evident in the company’s market performance. Strategy’s common stock has soared by more than 3,500% since Michael Saylor began the Bitcoin investment campaign. During the same period, Bitcoin itself has appreciated by about 1,100%, while the S&P 500 has grown approximately 120%.

While other cryptocurrencies have faced criticism over their infinite supply models, Bitcoin continues to attract institutional interest due to its capped supply of 21 million tokens. This scarcity is enforced through the original protocol, including periodic halving events that reduce mining rewards and limit token issuance over time. The final Bitcoin is projected to be mined by the year 2140.

In comparison, BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT), another major institutional holder, currently manages around $86 billion in Bitcoin assets. However, Strategy remains unmatched as the most substantial corporate investor in the digital asset.
