In a bold and innovative move, the Kingdom of Bhutan has officially entered the global cryptocurrency space — and it’s doing so with a unique twist: sustainability.

According to recent reports, Bhutan is utilizing its massive surplus of hydropower to mine cryptocurrencies in an eco-friendly manner, aiming to become a global hub for green crypto mining. This initiative is not just about blockchain technology — it’s about rebooting the nation’s economy with clean energy and digital innovation.

Bhutan’s sovereign wealth fund, Druk Holding and Investments (DHI), has already been quietly investing in Bitcoin and other digital assets since 2019. Profits from these investments have even been used to pay government salaries. Now, Bhutan plans to take things to the next level by scaling up crypto operations in a public and strategic push to curb youth unemployment, reduce mass emigration, and modernize the national economy.

“This isn’t just about mining Bitcoin. It’s about building an economy for the future — one that’s digital, sustainable, and inclusive,” said a senior government official.

The plan also includes initiatives to train Bhutanese youth in AI, blockchain development, and digital asset management. By doing so, the country hopes to reverse a troubling trend: more than 10% of its youth left the country between 2022 and 2023 seeking better opportunities abroad.

With 2.5 gigawatts of clean energy capacity and a potential of up to 33 gigawatts, Bhutan is uniquely positioned to offer “ESG-compliant” digital assets that multinational companies are increasingly seeking.

As nations grapple with the environmental impacts of crypto, Bhutan may be setting the gold standard — where green energy meets digital finance.
